SOS for Honeybees

At this years AGM the NFWI's 'SOS For Honeybees' resolution was passed with an overwhelming majority. The population of Honeybees in the UK has suddenly begun declining at around 30% per year (up from just 6% in 2003) and although it is understood that honeybees are coming under threat from a variety of pests and diseases, nobody really knows why they are dying out in such great numbers.

The NFWI's Bee Aware Action Week 24-31 October aims to raise awareness of the plight of the honeybee which plays such a vital role in pollinating plants for food as well as countless species of flowers and trees. The G.W.I. will of course be getting involved in raising the profile of the honeybee, so please guys, if you have any ideas how we can do this successfully, do let one of us know. The WI website has more information on the issue and how you can help.

At the G.W.I. vs. Goldsmiths Gentlemen Rounders match on Monday 28th we will be selling a variety of honey flavoured snacks to kick start our involvement with the campaign. If you'd like to donate something delicious for us to sell there are recipe ideas on the WI website!

We had a lovely evening at the end of May, tie-dying and making tea-towels from gorgeous vintage fabrics. To make our tie-dyed items we wrapped elastic bands in circles around the fabric; on the areas of the fabric on which an elastic band is tied the dye resists, leaving the colour the fabric was previously. I took my tie-dyed t-shirt to Thailand with me where it was perfect for wearing on the beaches, on which a relaxed, hippie vibe pervades.

These lovely pictures where taken by Emily, our Campaigns Officer.

Let's Get Down To Business

We've all been very busy here at G.W.I. so there has been a bit of a lull in activity. But we're back! Exams are over and we've got our first event lined up on Monday 18th, G.W.I. Cut and Stick, (although we won't be cutting or sticking!). We've got some nice little crafty numbers lined up for you though, Tie-Dye and Vintage Tea-Towel making. Bring an old t-shirt to pay homage to 70s tie-dye, and make a tea-towel to brighten up your grimy student kitchen. Add yourself to the event on Facebook and click attending to be put on the guest list, we've only got space for 50 people this time around, so get your name down quick! If there is lots of interest, we will of course be repeating the event.

Lots of love G.W.I.

The Formation

On Monday the Goldsmiths W.I. was oficially formed, with over forty girls turning up to become members. The Times were at the meeting to report on the creation of the first university based W.I. branch. We thought we'd share some photos of this special occasion with you.

What A Difference A Week Makes...

and what a great one we've had. I wouldn't like to speak on behalf of anyone else, but in this case, it feels like the W.I. is off to such a great start. Thanks to everyone for making it so exciting. The revamped Victoria Sponge looked great tonight on telly!

The Goldsmiths W.I. blog will serve as a hubbub of activity, whether it's linking up the latest meeting minutes, swapping new icing techniques, or waxing lyrical about a film we've seen. You'll also find the Facebook group in the links section.

Feel free to email us if you have a post you'd like to contribute, or any other whimseys you have for that matter!

Love,

G.W.I xx

Hello!

We're the Goldsmiths W.I.

It's been an absolutely mental week, and we've been so stoked to hear all the positive responses Goldsmiths newest society has recieved.

This will be our blog, to keep you updated with what's going on with the group, and any upcoming events.

I've literally got to go and stuff some lunch down me before a bit of filming this afternoon with some of the society, but thanks again for all your support!!

Love, India xo.
